Stop SOPA Blackout Skin by GillianIvy Stop SOPA Blackout Skin by GillianIvy

**Update**

SOPA-like issues are back, new petition for 2014:
SOPA 2014: Voluntary Agreements, TPP, and StaydownEDIT 3/17: Added some links, some additional notes, and some credit.
Important Note:
if you saw this in draft form before 6 P.M. EDT on March 14th, you didn't see the THIRD attempt to enforce SOPA-esque provisions OR the accurate petition. I added it it then.

A few days ago, I started seeing journals once again ranting about how SOPA is going to take away our fandom, or even our original content, in my feed here on deviantART. I did a search for reputable sources talking about it, and found just enough to be worth discussing, but not enough to justify the panic that's happened. I vowed I would do a journal about it come the weekend.
Since then, it's blown up. I've had numerous new faves on my old write-up of SOPA 201, despite it having "2013

Stop SOPA Blackout JournalDo you care about your rights?
I care about your rights.  SOPA is an infringement upon our rights.  Do you want the government controlling which websites it approves the use of?  Our freedoms for thought and free speech need to be protected for free internet.  In protest, blackout your pages, go silent, spread the word.  Petition sites you care about to do the same.
Who does SOPA effect?
Everyone who uses the internet.  Facebook, Twitter, social networking sites which cannot control the content posted by it's users and will be held responsible for it.  This is forced censorship.  This will not stop piracy.   This will effect law abiding citizens.  It does not protect our rights, it treads on it, spits on it, and throws our rights out the window at 100mph.

**Edit -- Wow, I managed to stay away from the internet for 22 hours (such a DA addict!) and just logged in to more than 500 messages, mainly for this.

I'd like to thank everyone for joining me in the protest and for the support, comments, faves and spreading my journal and avatar. I really appreciate that and unfortunately cannot reply to all. Thank you!

Thank you for helping to get accurate and useful information out there.. and of course, for linking my article.

Are there any plans for a blackout this year? I feel like I'm already in the midst of one given how much trying to coordinate a response to this is cutting into my Transformers time. XD

Thanks for the information, and the compliment. I tried really hard to cover the article as well as I could without losing most of the target audience, since a lot of dA's power users are so young and still in school. I hate seeing everyone panic.

Looks like the petition which has better information has less signatures than the "Stop SOPA, save fan art" one.  I've shared it again on my Twitter to get it more attention.

Thank you for that. A friend of mine put that one together. It's not perfect, but it does at least namedrop some specific threats to free expression o the internet. I think that one is more likely to get the kind of response everyone wants.

On the plus side, she did that one on Friday, so we have almost a month to get the other 95,000 signatures.

I guess it will not be a problem.  The other one was at the goal I believe.  It is just a shame when a petition that does not adequately explain itself is made, since it would likely get thumbed over and ignored.  Though, I think they do address every petition seriously, if it isn't properly represented then the point might not get across.
