Description

This is my first mini-Art Book which I have available for purchase on my Etsy Store: Miscellaneous Juxtapositions

This piece is very special to me. It is representative of my little sister. I create a memorial piece for her every year. This project didn't start as that, but quickly turned into that. She is depicted as the angel on one side. Myself holding the moon on the flipside. Her face had a radiant glow akin to the moon, and every night that I look at the full moon, or really, any time I look at the moon, I see her face. The anniversary of her death draws nearer, ever present on my mind. It was so long ago, but it's still as painful a loss as it was back then. Perhaps more so now.

This book is accordion style and handmade. I used black card stock and used mixed media for the illustration. Gold acrylic, gel pen and brush tip and micron pens. The cover is made from recycled cereal box and Chinese brocade. I tried to incorporate the design of the brocade into the design of my drawing.

I really love how this came out. I put a lot of effort into it and was afraid I was going to ruin it by adding too much to it. I worked in layers. Paint, then pen, fixative then pen and fixative some more... Overall, I'm satisfied with, in fact, in love with the results. To date, it's one of my favorite creations.

I handmade the box to match. I'm afraid my box making skills aren't exemplary or anything, but still, it reminds me of this little lipstick container I once had. I looked up a number of tutorials for different binding techniques. And really did my own. I used interfusing web and an iron to affix the fabric to the cardboard. It works rather nicely. No fancy book binding stuffs or sticky glues. And it's nicely secured and heat fused. I did use dabs of glue on some of the corners to prevent fraying. Brocade is a difficult material to work with, as it quickly can become a mess of threads.

I plan to make more mini art books like this for sale in my Etsy. The idea was inspired by *KatarinaNavane with her Fold Out Mini Books. Which are lovely and you should tell her so ;D
